Mathew Fierke creates sparse, minimal abstract paintings and drawings. He employs a unique painterly lexicon focused on line and expressive, gestural mark-making. These markings both form a structure upon which the composition develops and imbue the surface with an immediacy that animates the composition. He draws inspiration from his surroundings - the picturesque natural landscapes of British Columbia or scenes and textures from daily urban life. The subject matter of the paintings is developed from an archive of quickly made drawings on paper and kept open-ended to allow for unexpected connections between elements to emerge during the process. Recognizable imagery is secondary to highlighting the act of painting; he sees the surface as a tapestry of accumulated markings, which holds a complex visual puzzle for the viewer to engage with.

His works belong to private collections in British Columbia and the United states and have been exhibited across Vancouver. He is originally from Toronto, ON and currently lives and work in Vancouver, BC.
